This Christmas, as my flight touched down in Houston, I heard that my house had been burglarized.

What did our Grinchy thieves steal? My husband’s car — and my PlayStation 3, on loan from Sony.

Now, I’m a geek married to another geek, so we’ve got plenty of gadgets lying about. And I have a well-documented shoe-and-handbag problem. But the thieves bypassed all of our myriad finery to nick just two things: A coveted game console and a 2000 Audi A4 with a broken heater. Weird.

But one needed only to look at the listings on eBay in the days following the launch to see the motivation of many PlayStation 3 wannabes: pure profit. The machines, which retailed for $500 and $600, were reselling for more than $2000 immediately after the launch.

That demand dropped off steeply in the weeks following, with prices on eBay plunging from an average $2,367 on Nov. 16 to $724 on December 21, according to Michael Fahey, who detailed the price fluctuations in a recent post on gaming blog Kotaku.

“The root cause of all the prospecting and violence, in my opinion, was Sony's decision to release a console when they knew full well supply was nowhere near demand,” says Fahey. “Americans stole, lied, cheated, and hurt each other for the promise of a big payoff, which in the end amounted to nothing.”

So, were the perps behind our theft hard-core gamers or just looking to sell the console for a profit? Hard to tell. But even if they couldn’t distinguish a PlayStation from a Game Boy, the hype surrounding the hard-to-get machine certainly raised its profile. The thieves bypassed our year-old Xbox 360 and our ages-old Nintendo GameCube in favor of the sleek black PS3.

National frenzy
“There’s obviously been a national frenzy [over the game systems,]” says Sgt. Joel Tranter of the Phoenix police department. “And thieves know what’s valuable and what’s not.”

Most police departments I polled don’t segment stolen items by type, so it’s tough to know if our burglary was part of a nationwide trend, or just bad luck on Christmas Eve. But thefts of consumer electronics items like laptops, MP3 players and game consoles are most certainly on the rise.

“Thieves take items they can easily carry away,” says Enrique Garcia, press information officer for the San Jose police department in San Jose, Calif. “But this happens throughout the year, not just at Christmas.” More Here

Channel 4 to deliver content for PS3

Channel 4 is to deliver programming through Sony PlayStation Portable (PSP) consoles connected to wireless “hot spots” in a move designed to target viewers on the move, The Times has learnt.

From today Channel 4 will begin exploiting the PSP’s wireless connection facility by delivering programmes through the handheld gaming device.

Users will receive daily updates from the new series of Celebrity Big Brother, as well as Channel 4 News and music programming. The initial content is delivered in podcast form from the broadcaster’s new radio service.

Television broadcasts are expected to follow via PSPs, which are capable of playing full-length feature films.

Users are directed to a Channel 4 portal when they click on at one of 7,500 wi-fi locations, which enable people to access the internet wirelessly through handheld devices.

The wi-fi option is aimed at commuters, who can log on for internet updates at hot spots in railway stations, coffee shops and airports, which are operated by the Cloud wireless network.

Niall Murphy, co-founder of Cloud, said: “Wi-fi usage is starting to shift from business to consumer devices. Users will be demanding entertaining and unique content, which they can access on the way to and from work, university or school.”

Celebrity Big Brother, the new series of which begins today, is seen as a key brand for the young, digitally savvy audience targeted by Channel 4. Vodafone mobile is offering viewers a live stream from the Big Brother house for £1 a day.

Nathalie Schwarz, director of Channel 4 Radio, said: “Becoming the first broadcaster to make radio content available wirelessly on PSPs will help 4Radio connect with a young, mobile audience, making our programming easily available whenever and wherever they want.” For more click here Channel 4

Looking at the product listings for Blu-ray players here on ZDNet and in other searches (eg: Google), that appears to be sage advice, particularly if you're into gaming. Depending on where you shop, Playstation 3s (the 20GB version) run somewhere in the neighborhood of $670 to $700 (Amazon has it listed from one source for $668). Dedicated Blu-ray players can be had for less. For example, Amazon has Samsung's BD-P1000 Blu-Ray Disc Player for $569 (but that's with a $330 savings off the list price). You may find players for less elsewhere. The point being that the Playstation 3 doesn't necessarily mean you'll pay less money for a Blu-ray player by buying a Playstation 3 (although most Blu-ray players do cost more than the Playstation). But if you're a gamer or want the option of having a gaming console around, then a Playstation (if you can find one) may be the route to go.

Take the above $700 Playstation vs. $570 BD-P1000 as an example. Apply $570 of your $700 Playstation purchase to Blu-ray usage, and the implication is that you get everything else that the Playstation 3 is capable of for an extra $130. Mileage in terms of how much you pay for the Playstation 3 icing on the cake will vary of course (depending on how much you can find a Blu-ray player for). But, if you think you could use a Playstation 3 around the house (or even in the office so that your employees have something to help them decompress), then this route is worth investigating.

Wii outsells Ps3. Sad but true.

San Francisco - Wii outsold rival PlayStation 3 by more than double in the United States in November as the freshly launched video game consoles vied with Xbox 360 for devotees, figures released on Friday showed.

Nintendo sold 476 140 of its Wii consoles in the United States in November while Sony managed to sell 196 580 of its new PlayStations, according to industry tracking group NPD.

During the month, Microsoft sold 511 300 of its Xbox 360 consoles, which it brought to market a year ago. Wii and PlayStation 3 were released for sale in the United States in mid-November.

Manufacturing problems curtailed the number of PlayStation 3 systems available for the US and Japan launches and prompted Sony to postpone the consoles' Europe debut next year.

Wii consoles were snatched up quickly after their debut in Europe on Friday as the innovative system featuring motion-responsive controllers gained status as the must-have video game.

TOKYO - Thieves stole 180 Sony PlayStation 3 video game consoles from a warehouse in northern Japan on Tuesday following the sellout launch of the console last month, police said.
Transport company Meitetsu Golden Air Cargo left a shipment of PS3 consoles stacked in front of a warehouse and had planned to ship them to a retailer.
But a worker noticed about four hours later that 180 of the consoles were missing, according to a policeman who gave only his family name, Iwabuchi.
Police were investigating the theft, he said.
Sony Corp.’s PS3 hit Japanese stores on Nov. 11. The consoles sold out quickly to eager fans who had waited in long lines overnight. Its debut in the U.S. a week later was marked by rowdy crowds and store stampedes.

The PS3's 3.2 GHz Cell processor, developed jointly by Sony, Toshiba and IBM ("STI"), is an implementation to dynamically assign physical processor cores to do different types of work independently. It has a PowerPC-based "Power Processing Element" (PPE) and six accessible 3.2 GHz Synergistic Processing Elements (SPEs), a seventh runs in a special mode and is dedicated to OS security, and an eighth disabled to improve production yields. The PPE, SPE's and other elements ("units") are connected via an Element Interconnect Bus which serves to connect all of the units in a ring-style bus. The PPE has a 512 KiB level 2 cache and one VMX vector unit. Each SPE is a RISC processor with 128 128-bit SIMD GPRs and superscalar functions. Each SPE contains 256 KiB of non-cached memory (local storage, "LS") that is shared by program code and work data. SPEs may access more data in the main memory using DMA. The floating point performance of the whole system (CPU + GPU) is reported to be 2.18 TFLOPS^[74]. PlayStation 3's Cell CPU achieves 204 GFLOPS single precision float and 15 GFLOPS double precision. The PS3 will ship with 256 MiB of Rambus XDR DRAM, clocked at CPU die speed.

The Cell microprocessor allows programmers to assign SPE's different work by running individual programs on them. Programmers may also arrange data flow in different ways, for example using parallel, pipelined or streamed processing data flow models. As an example for parallel processing performance gains, one core could work on decoding and multiplexing audio, another core may perform computations on realistic projectiles ballistics, while another might govern the activities of the main character. The programmer still has three more cores not yet assigned but the only remaining tasks are to collect the work performed and display the results on the screen. Since the program code on each SPE core is executed from its local store memory, much more Element Interconnect Bus bandwidth is available to transfers of work data. An obvious downside to this is that there is a 256 KiB size restriction on SPE programs, which may present a challenge for certain programming tasks.

The Graphics Processing Unit is based on the NVIDIA G70 (previously known as NV47) architecture, which focuses on maximizing per-pixel computation in favor of raw pixel output. The GPU will make use of 256 MiB GDDR3 VRAM clocked at 700 MHz. The GPU has access to the XDR main memory as well.

The PS3 supports standard and HDTV resolutions (up to 1080p60) and connectivity options (such as HDMI 1.3 ^[76] and component video)^[77]. In terms of audio, the PS3 will support a number of formats, including 7.1 digital audio, Dolby TrueHD, and others. For the optical drive, a wide variety of DVD and CD formats are supported, as well as Blu-ray Disc. A 20 GB / 60 GB 2.5" SATA 150 hard disk is pre-installed. In the 60 GB configuration, flash memory can also be used — either Memory Stick, CompactFlash, or SD/MMC. For communication, the PS3 will have one gigabit ethernet port, four USB 2.0 ports, and will support Bluetooth 2.0 EDR.

Compared to the protype version, the console has many more ventilation holes, and uses heat pipes; Sony claims the system is as quiet as a slim PS2. Physically, the PlayStation 3 is approximately 5 kg (11 lb), 9.8 cm × 32.5 cm × 27.4 cm (3.9 in. × 12.8 in. × 10.8 in.). The power supply is built into the console and a standard 3-pin IEC connector is present at the base of the console. The current Japanese console is marked as 100v externally, but internally as Universal 100V-240V and works within Europe and worldwide. Rumors about the power consumption, based on the peak capability of the power supply (380 watts), were spread through generally reliable sites such as cnet, which claimed the Cell microprocessor was the culprit (the Cell microprocessor uses approximately 40 watts
